Jazmine Sullivan

JazmineJazmine Jazmine, who is Philadelphia native was raised and born there. Her mother Pam was a vocalist for the backup band of Philadelphia International Records. Her father gave her the position of curator of the Historic Strawberry Mansion. She and her family then relocated to the historical famous landmark. She graduated in 2005 of Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts where she was a vocal music major. Sullivan was first singing in the kids' choir as a contralto and then she joined the adult choir a few years later. Sullivan wasn't exposed to secular music initially. "I was singing for the first time solo in the church, and someone suggested I sign up to record a gospel song at the age of 11. But I wasn't prepared for that," she says. "Then the time came that McDonald's had a competition for youngsters in the major cities, I got a chance to sing 'Accept What God Allows' on It's Showtime at the Apollo and the audience responded really well". Stevie Wonder sang her part at his 13th birthday. Sullivan aged 15 was signed for the first time to Jive Records. There, she recorded the entire album but the album wasn't released. Sullivan was eventually removed at the hands of the company. She maintained a working relationship with Missy Elliott who wrote and recorded a number of the tracks in her debut album such as the brash single "Backstabbers" - produced by Timbaland and written by Elliott.
